CLASSES/EDUCATION
Courses
There will be a General/Amateur Extra class on September 22 and 29, And October 6 and 20. Test will be October 27. Times are 0900 - 1600. (9am to 4pm). Location is 17175 Rt 6 Smethport, Pa 16749. The EMA 911 building. We will be using the EOC again for the class. We will not be covering each and every question but rather covering topics. We will combine the General class and Extra class topics together. Many of the questions are of the type where you need to memorize the answers. Such as:
What type of instrument can be used to accurately measure an RF field strength?
A. A receiver with digital signal processing (DSP) noise reduction
B. A calibrated field strength meter with a calibrated antenna
C. An SWR meter with a peak-reading function
D. An oscilloscope with a high-stability crystal marker generator You can learn this on your own.
Answer is B
You will need books. You should get both the General and Amateur Extra class manuals. You can purchase these through the ARRL website. You can get the ARRL or the Gordon West books. They are $32.95 each. If you have an older book that will probably be ok as there are very few changes in the question pool when they update it every 4 years. Please register by contacting me at [email protected] or call me 814-331-3095. I have a bunch of handouts and need to know how many to make. You will also need a scientific calculator. I use a Casio FX20 solar, Walmart for $9.78. One more thing I need you to do. When you get the books and start reading make note of any questions you are having difficulties with. We will address these in class. We will be covering mostly the technical side of the test questions. Dealing with electronics, a bunch of math, but nothing you didn't learn back in high school. Any question please contact Bruce Manning.
Please contact Bruce Manning, NJ3K, to let him know you are attending: [email protected]

EVENTS
Club Picnic and September VHF Contest
The annual picnic for the McKean County Amateur Radio Club will be held Saturday, September 14, 2024, at the Foster Township Community Park. We will also be participating in the September VHF contest that day for a few hours.
This picnic is open to all active & non-active members, new amateurs, and anyone interested in amateur radio. If you are coming to the picnic, please email [email protected] with how many people will be attending and if you are bringing a dish to pass. We will have bottled water available. Feel free to bring your own beverages (no alcohol please).
The plan is to set up an HF and VHF+ station at 10:30 AM. We will eat around 12:30 PM. For anyone who wants to stay and operate during the September VHF contest, we will start that at 2 PM. This is a great way for techs and new amateurs to get on the air.
